Co-operation with IZOP Institute in Aachen
In August DAPHNE was asked by Mr. Norbert Hilger from IZOP Institute in Aachen to host app. 20 German students from highschool in Dresden and 20 Slovak students from Gymnasium Vazovova in Bratislava. Students of both schools takes part in DBU supported project "Youth in Europe - Environmental Networking". Students were doing journalistic investigation and the topic for it was our DBU project: Environmental communication in school and villages of Lower Morava region. Students spent one day with us and became familiar with different aspects of our project. As a result they wrote 5 articles in Slovak that should have been published in daily newspaper "SME" in Slovakia and 5 articles in German that should have been published in Sächsische Zeitung in Germany. The visit took place on September 18, 2006.

Preparation and implementation of small environmental projects
Based on the ideas that were presented during the school events, school project co-ordinators in co-operation with Daphne project team prepared small project proposals aimed at the improvement of some aspect of the school/village environment. The project proposals were written during April and beginning of May. Consequently the Agreement on co-operation in implementation of small environmental project was prepared and signed by a particular school and Daphne.

During May and June and after summer holiday also during September, the schools were implementing the small projects with the help of other teachers, schoolmates, parents, local companies etc. However it has to be stressed that the substantial work was done by the school team together with other schoolmates under the guidance of teachers.

The most important aspect and strong ground of the small projects is that the initiative for the environmental improvements comes from students and by mean of them also adults are involved in the particular environmental activities. The project sets a positive example of cooperation between the students, parents, teachers and citizens in order to achieve common goals.

Visit of Daphne project team to Germany
May 17 - May 19, 2006 two members of Daphne project team (Andrea Vicenikova, Viera Chrenkova) visited Germany. Ibn was represented by Axel Paulsch and Thomas Kamp. The reason of the visit was to organise a project co-ordination meeting and to visit a selected ecocentres in Germany to learn about their activities and to share experiences that could be used in Slovak condition in work with the schools. Useful information and education materials were collected and new contacts were established that can be used in a future German-Slovak co-operation.

May 18, 2006 we visited the Ecocentre at the castle Wiesenfelden. Thanks for a wonderful hospitality to Mr. Hubert Weinzierl and Mrs. Beate Seitz-Weinzierl and thanks for a great guidance of Mr. Robert Bäumler.

The presentations had generally three parts. In the first part, the students presented the results of their environmental survey using the poster they have already made. Then they presented their vision of the environment they wish to live in. The presentation was done as a radio forecast, or as a mix of presentation and a theatre play or in another interesting way. Second part of the presentation was the discussion. During the third part the school team or the school co-ordinator presented the ideas for the small environmental project and the ideas were discussed. Participants were also asked to contribute to the small project in any possible way depending on their possibilities.

After the survey of environmental situation was done, the analysis of the results was conducted by each school team. Afterwards the school teams started a preparation of a poster presenting the survey results and the poster presenting a student's vision of a healthy environment.

Each poster consists of four A2 format parts connected with one common title. Each A2 format part is focusing on one of four areas of the survey - Water, Biodiversity, Energy, Waste. All posters were laminated in order to prevent their damage during the transportation and presentation and to be useable for mobile exhibition later on.

A third meeting of school team co-ordinators was held in the EcoCentre DAPHNE on February, 7, 2006. Each school co-ordinator brought completed project handbook summarising the school team work together with two posters that were prepared by a school team. The plan for the future activities of the project were presented and agreed.

During June and later from September until December every school team was conducting the survey of the school buildings, their surrounding area, and the village environment (months July and August are official school holiday, but some school teams had several meetings also during this time). The school co-ordinator was a leader of the research and helped students to solve the problems and answer the questions they had. The project handbook was very helpful in a sense of providing the guidance. Each school team was completing the activities in four areas - water, biodiversity, energy and waste and filling the project handbook.

A second meeting of school team co-ordinators was held in the EcoCentre DAPHNE on September, 29, 2005. Altogether 13 participants from the schools of the Lower Morava region and the Slovakian project team were present. The school co-ordinators presented the results of the surveying the current state of the school/village environment, how the school team worked, what were the successes and what problems the team was facing. Each of them presented also own comments to our project handbook. Generally teachers were very enthusiastic and they concluded that also children were very eager to do all the activities.

By the end of June 2005, the second part of the educational programme (field work) was conducted with all school teams involved in the project.

At the beginning of March (March 1 -March 2, 2005) the first project co-ordination meeting was held in Bratislava. The project team met to discuss the technical issues of the projects, internal communication within the project, plan of activities and financial provisions.

An educational programme (Activity 1) about the Lower Morava region for the primary school students (age 11 - 15 years) was prepared. The programme has two parts. First - general part consist of theory presented to the students in a classroom. It is focused on actual environmental problems of the region and the ways of their possible solution. Second part is practical, held indoor and outdoor, and it is done only with the school teams involved in the project. This part of the educational programme is aimed at training the students how to use the project handbook.

Starting at the beginning of April the first part of the programme has been held at 12 primary schools of Lower Morava region that are involved in the project.

Starting at the beginning of May, after the project handbook was printed out, the second part of the educational programme (field work) has been conducted gradually with project school teams of primary schools involved in the project.

Outdoor program brings the opportunity for children to apply knowledge from theoretical part of the educational programme to practice. The outdoor programme is divided into 4 main steps:

Step 1:
At the beginning children from the school team, teacher and instructor meet all together near the survey area. Instructor explains the sense and mission of the project as well as the aim of the activities - to improve the state of the environment in their settlement. They start with the survey in the theme "Water". Kids are divided into 2 working groups - biologists and chemists. Kids are full of expectations what will continue...

Step 2:
Children who choose the group of biologists become the "hunters" and observers of the life under the water. By identification of water invertebrates and by special schemes for biomonitoring they identify quality of water. There is also possibility to search for animal signs/tracks in the surrounding of water body, for example trees gnawed by beavers, bird feathers, bird nests etc. Instructor explains how all these signs are important for evaluation of the water quality.

Step 3:
Second group of children, the chemists, analyse the quality of water with the help of small moving laboratory and instructor leads them in identification of the chemical quality of water. This analysis reveals the level of chemical pollution that exists in the surface water and kids are trying to identify the potential sources of pollution in their river.

Step 4:
Kids compare the results from the biological and chemical analyses of water quality. One group informs the other about the work and methods they have undertaken during their research.

Following pictures are illustrating the activities of kids in individual settlements:

Step 1: Introduction into research
Step 2: Small chemists
Step 3: Exploring water invertebrates
Step 4: What we found/observed

A project handbook for the schools (Activity 2) was prepared and printed at the end of April. A main aim of the project handbook is to explain the meaning of the project, steps that have to be undertaken, and to provide guidance for teachers and students to carry out the activities. This is black and white "testing" version of the handbook printed in 300 copies. The feedback of all target groups during the project implementation will be considered and finally, at the end of the project a final, improved version will be prepared.

Surveying and analysing the current state of the school/town environment - Guide to Work Sheets
The work sheets guide students how to make a survey in the school building and school grounds and in the village separately in each area: water, biodiversity, energy, waste.

Processing and presentation of the results
The chapter deals with the preparation of the posters, creation of the student's vision of a healthy school and town environment and its presentation and the ways of presenting both posters (survey results and the vision) using different kinds of art - painting, theatre, TV shooting, etc.

Preparing and implementation of the small environmental projects
Thic chapter brings upon: How to prepare a project, model example of a good project, suggestions for, and types of small projects separately for each area: water, biodiversity, energy, waste with the aim to improve some aspect that they found could be improved.

A Workshop for directors and teachers of primary schools to DBU project was held in the EcoCentre DAPHNE on April, 20, 2005. Altogether 19 participants were present including the project team.
