World of the Carpathians – Handbook for Environmental Education
Královičová, A., Herianová, S. (eds.), 2009: World of the Carpathians – Handbook for Environmental Education. DAPHNE – Institute of Applied Ecology, Bratislava, 367 p.
Preview in PDF
To prepare this publication, we built our work on the long experience that DAPHNE has had with preparation of handbooks for elementary school teachers – World of Wetlands, World of Peatlands, World of Grasslands, World of Forests, and Diversity of Life. However, this is the first time when a handbook exceeds the borders of Slovakia and covers the entire Carpathian arc. In this context, our focus was on issues related to biodiversity.
Considering their form and content, each chapter is divided to the information part for teachers, activity proposals for pupils and worksheets. Forty authors and reviewers from all Carpathian countries were involved in the preparation of the chapters. Each made a contribution of their knowledge within their field of interest, thus building up the mosaic of life in the Carpathians.
To compile the handbook, we chose to apply the habitat approach. Within the frame of the main Carpathian habitats – forests, grasslands, waters and wetlands, extreme habitats – you will get to know the main groups of organisms (vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, fungi, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fishes, invertebrates), which live there. Based on this knowledge are the activity proposals for pupils as well as the worksheets to these activities. The activities focus on supporting interactive forms and methods of teaching, group work, learning through doing, playing games and completing interesting tasks, having the motivation and active involvement of children as their implicit goal.
The publication was issued in both Slovak and English languages.

Diversity of Life. Handbook for primary school teachers
Viceníková, A., (ed.), 2007: Rozmanitosť života. Príručka pre učiteľov základných škôl. DAPHNE - Inštitút aplikovanej ekológie, Bratislava, 178 s.
After series of four handbooks for primary school teachers published by DAPHNE, there was prepared another one in 2007, focusing on the topic of diversity of life. It covers also the topics of previous handbooks (World of Wetlands, World of Grasslands, World of Peatlands, and World of Woodlands), summarise them and completed with additional topics. The handbook keeps the same format and structure as previous ones.
First three chapters brings upon the complex view on biodiversity and answer the questions: 1. What it is biodiversity and why it is important, 2. What levels biodiversity includes, 3. What are the main threats to the biodiversity and what we are doing and can do to save it. Two following chapters deal with the biodiversity in Slovakia and its protection - species and areas protection. The last one, 6-th chapter, summarises the biodiversity related topics in the natural science subject in primary schools.
Every chapter is divided into information for teachers, activities for pupils and worksheets which can be easily photocopied. Activities are of different level and complexity and aiming to be used either in the classroom, or in the school yard or during the field excursion. Activities are prepared in a way to support interactivity, group work, creativity, engagement and motivation of students. Worksheets can serve also as a basis for the preparation of teaching tools. Their use with the possible adaptation to the age and type of class depends also on the creativity of teacher.
Handbook was prepared within the project supported by Environmental Fund Diversity of Life - strengthening of environmental education in primary schools and kindergartens, in 700 copies. It is black and white but includes colourful identification keys for determination of wood tree species, wood invertebrates, peatland plants, peatlant vertebrates, water invertebrates and medical plants. Identification keys were appreciated by teachers during the training sessions for teachers as a visual, interesting and useful teaching tool.

Schools Help to Improve the Environment. Handbook on Environmental Education.
Vicenikova, A., (ed.), 2006: Schools Help to Improve the Environment. DAPHNE - Institute of Applied Ecology. Bratislava, 146 p. (in Slovak).
The publication is the result of two years lasting project: Environmental Communication in Schools and Villages of Lower Morava Region and experiences gained during its implementation. It is highly recommended for primary schools, free time centres and eco-centres. It focuses at steps that allow schools to implement the project that will improve some area of the environment. The main participants are school students (the most recommended are 9 - 11 years old), which undertake the role of researcher and with the help of teacher undertake several connected activities. Those are related to four areas of the environment: water, biodiversity, energy and waste. Handbook plays the role of the guide that explains to students main terms, brings the tasks, which should be solved, explains what and how to research, how to make a presentation of the results and how to write the project proposal. The production of the publication was supported by German Fund for the Environment.

The
World of Woodlands - Handbook for Primary School Teachers
Vicenikova,
A. (ed.), 2004: The World of Woodlands - Handbook for Primary School
Teachers. DAPHNE - Institute of Applied Ecology, Bratislava, 306 p.
At
the end of 2004 the publishing of 'The World of Wetlands', 'The World
of Grasslands' and 'The World of Peatlands' handbooks was successfully
followed up with the publication of another handbook in this series
aimed at primary school teachers. This time attention was directed towards
woodland ecosystems. In eight chapters the handbook guides you through
the world of woodlands. You will find out what a woodland is, how it
fulfils its functions, which are the main types of woods found in Slovakia,
which kinds of plants, vertebrates and invertebrates live in them, how
they are adapted to ecological conditions of woods, what things cause
them to become endangered and how it is possible to preserve them. Every
chapter is divided into information for teachers, activities for pupils
and worksheets which can be easily photocopied. The main reason for
the handbook is to help teachers to prepare lessons with environmental
and ecological content, to inspire them and to give them motivation.
The handbook was prepared and published in co-operation with the Danish
organisation Bio/Consult, Ltd. within the framework of the project 'Natura
200 - Bridging The Implementation Process', which was financed by the
Danish environmental agency (DEPA) under the DANCEE program. <list>
Biodiversity
of Abrod - State, Changes and Restoration
Stanová V. & Viceníková, A., 2003: Biodiversity of Abrod
- State, Changes and Restoration. DAPHNE - Institute of Applied Ecology,
Bratislava, 270 p.
The
Abrod reserve was established in 1964 and belongs amongst the best known
reserves in the Borská lowlands. The fen grasslands preserved in this
area contribute significantly to Slovakia's biodiversity. Since 1994
DAPHNE - Institute of Applied Ecology, in co-operation with the Administration
of Protected Landscape Area Záhorie, has carried out activities to protect
the resereve and study the ecological relationships at this exceptional
and rare locality. This publication is the result of several projects.
The trilateral Phare CBC project - financed by the Phare Multi-Country
Program under the European Union - allowed floristic and faunistic research
to be carried out across the area in 1999. Its aim was to describe the
current state of biodiversity with a focus on flora, vegetation and
selected indication groups of animals. The printing of the book was
financed by the Danish Cooperation for the Environment in Eastern Europe
(DANCEE) Programme.
The results of the research confirmed the importance of Abrod from the
point of view of biodiversity. The book consists of 26 chapters summarising
these results. Within the research several first findings were recorded,
these mainly among the macroscopic fungi and spider species. For many
species Abrod is the only locality in which they occur in Slovakia,
further adding to Abrod´s importance from the standpoint of biodiversity.

Morava Floodplains
Stanová, V.
a kol., 2003: Nivou Moravy. DAPHNE - Institute of Applied Ecology, Edition
II, Bratislava, 40 pages
This
is the second improved and updated edition first published in 1995,
which presents a guide to the ecosystems of the River Morava floodplains.
It elucidates the flora and fauna of the river and its bank-side zones,
of its softwood and hardwood floodplain forests, its dead-end tributaries,
floodplain meadows and sand-dunes. The characteristics of these ecosystems
are illustrated by way of schematic diagrams of individual types of
ecosystems and by diagrams of most of the plant and animal species mentioned
in the text. The introduction to the brochure talks about the significance
and the protection of the territory of the River Morava floodplains
and about the modifications to water-management on the river and their
influences on the countryside. Supplementing the brochure are two coloured
maps and a section of coloured photographs, included in the centre of
the publication. <list>
Catalogue
of Slovakian Habitats
Stanová, V.,

- Institute of Applied Ecology, Bratislava, 225 pages.
The
intensive mapping of habitats, the choice of territories for the system
of European protection of areas under Natura 2000 and the preparation
of management plans for the protection of areas in Slovakia all required
the publication of a new Catalogue of Slovakian Habitats. Apart from
the methodology of habitat mapping for the needs of preparing management
plans catalogue contains the descriptions of individual types of habitats
which are located in Slovakia. These are arranged into 13 formational
groups. Descriptions of individual types of habitats comprise concise
information about phytocoenology, structure and ecology, species compositions
and occurrence. The catalogue also contains surveys of European and
nationally significant habitats and very valuable conversion tables
which facilitate the conversion of various so-far used systems of classification
of habitats in Slovakia to the system used in the catalogue.

important views on management of wet grasslands based on the personal
experiences of protected areas managers. The publication is divided
into 5 main chapters as follows: Wet grasslands including types of wet
grasslands, their value and threats to them, Site evaluation and management
planning, Ecological requirements of plant communities, invertebrates
and birds, Management techniques including water management and Survey
and monitoring of flora and fauna of wet grasslands. At the end were
enclosed two appendices summarising the ecological requirements of water,
swamp and grassland plant species. <list>
The
World of Wetlands - Handbook for Primary School Teachers - 3rd edition
Viceníková,
A. (ed.), 2002: The World of Wetlands - Handbook for Primary School Teachers.
DAPHNE - Institute of Applied Ecology, Bratislava, 243 pages.
In
June 1999 the DAPHNE organisation first published 'The World of Wetlands'.
The book is already in its third (improved and updated) edition, owing
to great interest not satisfied by the printing of the 2nd edition in
2000. This publication aims to serve as a means of passing on the experience
and know-how about wetlands on which their preservation relies, which
show just how beautiful the wetland is and how it is a source of real
joy. Through using 'The World of Wetlands' handbook, teachers will know
exactly what a wetland is, what significance and functions it has, the
kinds of plants and animals that live there and the special adaptations
they have developed in order to survive in wetland conditions. They will
find out about soil and the life within it, how everything is connected
with everything else, about the main influences which endanger the wetland
and how everyone can contribute to its protection. Each of the 14 chapters
is split into three parts. The Information Section is a brief summary
of factual information, the Activity Section provides themes on various
activities for pupils of the first two years of primary school. The third
section comprises worksheets which relate to certain activities already
covered in the chapter. These worksheets are designed such that they are
easy to photocopy so as they can be used in various lessons. The only
limits are the imagination and creativeness of the teacher! The final
part of the book contains various supplementary activities which are not
focused only on wetlands, but which have a wider use and a review of teaching
and ecological literature. <list>
The
World of Peatlands - Handbook for Primary School Teachers
Viceníková, A. (ed.), 2002: The World of Peatlands - Handbook
for Primary School Teachers. DAPHNE - Institute of Applied Ecology, Bratislava,
211 pages.
In
May 2002 the publishing of both 'The World of Wetlands' (1999, 2000) and
'The World of Grasslands' handbooks was successfully followed up with
the publication of another handbook in this series aimed at primary school
teachers. This time attention was directed towards peatland ecosystems.

The
World of Grasslands - Handbook for Primary School Teachers
Viceníkova, A. (ed.), 2000:
World of Grasslands - Manual for Teachers, DAPHNE - Institute of Applied
Ecology, Bratislava, 154 p.
The
manual presents the knowledge and experience about different aspects ofgrasslands.
It is also an invitation to spend some time visiting the grassland areas,
to see, touch, smell, hear and taste the spirit of grasslands. The team
of authors included several experts from DAPHNE, the Protected Landscape
Area Zahorie Administration and from the Faculty of Natural Sciences Comenius
University in Bratislava.
World of Grasslands contains 8 chapters - What is a grassland, Functions
of grasslands, Types of grasslands in Slovakia, Special adaptation of
plants and animals to grassland conditions, Plants and animals - vertebrates
and invertebrates - in grasslands, Threats to grasslands and How can we
help?
Each chapter consists of three parts - background information, activity
lesson plans and activity sheets. The activity lesson plans are aimed
at age groups from 6 to 14 years old. The activity sheets are designed
to be easily copied and used in different classes. They can be modified
and in this sense we rely upon the creativity of teachers. The manual
should motivate and inspire not only teachers but all educators, helping
them to include grassland topics into their classes. <list>
